Holland has been offering another form of higher education for more than 50 years: advanced courses taught in English in what is known as ‘international education’.
These institutes (6) focus on development-oriented courses, based on working in small, intercultural groups and the exchange of knowledge, facilitated by teachers with extensive experience of working in low-income countries.
■ PhD (only possible at 1 institute): duration is flexible
■ Master of Arts (MA): 1 – 2 years
■ Master of Science (MSc): 1 – 2 years

- Foundation STC-Group/Netherlands Maritime University
- Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS)
- Institute of Social Studies (part of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam) (ISS)
- ITC, Faculty of Geo-Information, Science and Earth Observation (part of the University of Twente)
- Maastricht School of Management (MSM)
- UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education
