Insurance

Aug 14, 2009

Dutch law requires everyone living in Holland to be covered by health insurance.

Students must make sure that they have adequate cover. If the insurance you have in your own country provides full cover for medical costs while you are in Holland, you should bring with you a statement (in English) detailing the insurance cover. If you do not have adequate cover, you will have to take out an insurance. In some situations you may be obliged to join the Dutch public health insurance scheme, for example if you have a job in Holland, do a paid internship. The student dean at your host institution can provide you with more information. Some insurance policies are specially developed for students, please see the PDF brochure about health insurance.

Liability insurance provides cover for loss or damage that you accidentally cause to someone else and which you are held liable for. This kind of insurance might not be so common in other countries, but you could find yourself in trouble if you damage someone’s property while in the Netherlands and don’t have proper insurance cover.

AON and Lippmann both offer special insurance packages for international students to provide cover for healthcare, dental care, exceptional costs and assistance, accidents, liability, legal assistance and luggage.

For more information, see the pages of Lippmann and AON.
