Our world is one with a changing climate, growing population and depleting natural resources, as such, it is essential that we drastically change our ways. People everywhere are now taking reactive, as well as proactive measures to deal with these issues. I am a student currently pursuing an MSc in Climate Science and Policy at TERI University, New Delhi, and I learn about these concerns, current measures taken to deal with them and also proposed future solutions, on a daily basis.

December 2009, I had the most amazing experience. I was offered an opportunity to attend the 15th Conference of Parties, at Copenhagen, as a Youth Ambassador representing South Asia. ICCO (The Interchurch Organization for Development Cooperation), a Dutch, non-profit organization, made this a possibility by organizing for 10 Youth Ambassadors from 4 different countries to embark on a journey that influenced our lives in many different ways. For me it was an incredible learning experience, one that no formal education could have provided.

I must confess that I learnt a lot more in the 2 week orientation programme held in The Netherlands, than I had imagined. We visited community villages that had achieved complete self-sufficiency in a wholly sustainable manner. Simple yet highly efficient technologies, implemented in a systematic and meticulously planned way, allowed them to reduce their carbon and ecological footprints, setting an example for other communities all over the world. Not only are they adapting to, and mitigating the impacts of climate change, they are also improving their standards of living. Their level of community awareness and participation was truly inspiring, justifying the fact that their country is at the forefront of fighting against climate change.
